With all this virus business going on, all our travel plans have been put on the back burner for a while. Though the future is still uncertain, I imagine we are all looking ahead to when we are able to travel and experience the outdoors again. I want to share with you some of the trips I’m planning for the future. I have several trips in the pipeline for the winter coming. One is a technical dive trip to Malta in Feb 2021, another one will be in December 2020 when I am thinking of going to Chile to see the solar eclipse, or if my budget wont stretch to that I want to tick off cycling from John O Groats to Land’s End. Another hopeful one is Scotland for a trail running race in September.
The one I’m most excited about though is this crazy idea I had…
I’ve always liked those cheap flight challenge videos on youtube, where you take the 3 cheapest flights in a row and see where that takes you. I’ve seen parts of a series from a few years ago by Richard Quest from CNN business traveller where he went around the world on low cost carriers. I’ve mulled over this in my head and spent hours on google flights to come up with a rough plan of how I could do this in about a month in January.
Starting from Jersey (where I live) to London on EasyJet.
London to Budapest on Wizz.
Budapest to Dubai on Wizz.
Dubai to Kochi India on Spice Jet.
Kochi to Kuala Lumpur on Airasia.
KL to Honolulu, Hawaii on Airasia via Osaka.
Honolulu to Oakland, California on Southwest.
LA to London on Norwegian.
London to Jersey Easyjet.
Provided all these airlines stay afloat after this unprecedented grounding situation, and prices do not increase massively, I think all this can be done for around £600!
I have even already booked some legs of it! I already have the London to Budapest leg, KL to HON, and LAX to London legs booked because those prices were very low already. The others may go down in the next months. Or up, we shall see. Still this is very low pricing for such an itinerary.
There are some catches though, as you’d expect! These fares are the most super uber basic fares, so no baggage, food, seat selection, airport check in, nothing! Not even overhead bin access! I will be travelling extremely light, taking only what can fit under the seat in front of me, a 40 x 30 x 20 backpack! Very different from the usual bag of dive kit I normally bring with me.
What got me into thinking this would be a good idea was during a long 15hr flight leg from Sydney to Doha, I looked out of the window at the land we were passing and thought ‘look at all the stuff we’re missing’. Flying across the world in a short time is all well and good but I want to experience the journey properly, and maybe the destination isn’t so important then. It will be a challenge, living out of only a small backpack, sitting through so many budget flights most at weird times of the day and night! But it’s the adventure of seeing a new country every week, experiencing new cultures, getting the passport stamps, seeing the world and the people change from West to East and back to West again will make it one great adventure!
What are you all planning for when this is all over? Comment below!
