2020 round up

2020s been an interesting year to say the least! I had so many travel plans that had to be put aside and most (but not all) races postponed. But out of the dark came new opportunities.

On the travel side of things, I would usually be looking forward to a month or so trip somewhere this time of year. I’d been thinking of heading to either Chile or Argentina to see the total solar eclipse, instead I watched it on live stream.

Another plan that had to change was my idea to link up cheap flights around the world.

Hopefully low cost airlines will survive into 2021.

I had some big races planned too, a 60k in May, and a 100k in November were passed over to next year. Also the 50k Ben nevis ultra in September didn’t make it. We all thought back in April that surely it would be over by then!

I did manage to do the Round the Rock ultra this year, which was epic! very hot and took a lot of effort. I will write my account of it in time.

Something interesting to come out of 2020 are these virtual events, where you strive toward a goal over a week or so. Choose to split it evenly over the week or do it all in a day. I did some by Centurion running, a vertical challenge and a 100 mile distance one. Over a week I climbed the height of Everest, all on one set of stairs on the cliffs in Jersey! I really enjoyed these events, especially when 1 or 2 others were participating in the same area.

Races booked for 2021 so far:

January Virtual 50 miles

April Double top ultra 60k

June Round the Rock 75k

September Ben Nevis Ultra 50k

November CI 100k

My diving picked up again in June, as soon as we were permitted to open. And it was busy! Probably the busiest summer season I’ve seen in 10 years. Which meant long days and night diving and boating! The weather played ball most of the time, and we managed to keep going well into November.

During the summer I certified over 100 divers in various disciplines from beginners, to professional levels. Normally I would do half that number.

Lastly, I will always remember 2020 for throwing up random opportunities and turning me in a direction I would never have looked. I became a health care assistant at my local hospital! They took on about 200 in May – June did some training and I’ve been doing it part time since then. I really enjoy it, who knows I may go and train to be a nurse eventually.
